HOW MUCH DO EV CHARGERS COST?

The price of EV charger installation can start around £1000 – £1500, depending on the number of chargers installed, the type, and other installation specifics such as cables, fixtures, etc.

Like the EVHS for domestic properties, businesses can be eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), which is a voucher-based scheme that helps with the up-front costs of installing a commercial charging point for businesses and organisations eligible for it.

It enables businesses to claim £350 per charging point installed to a maximum of 40 across all sites and even includes a single unit that incorporates two charging ports so you would be eligible for a grant of up to £700 for this.

To qualify for the WCS, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A legitimate need for EV chargers such as an existing EV fleet, to encourage staff members to switch to EVs, or to provide a charging solution for employees and visitors.
  • Sufficient off-street parking suitable for EV charger installation.
  • Installation carried out by an OZEV-authorised installer.
  • Charge points using smart technology.

Most businesses provide free-of-cost charging to their staff as an incentive, some have a time-based rate where the users are required to pay based on the amount of time they have used the EV chargers, and some offer free services for a particular time (minutes or hours) and a fee after that to encourage employees to not hoard the chargers and give others a chance as well.

LARGE-SCALE EV CHARGER SPEEDS (AVERAGES)

Here is a useful guide for the average charging speeds for large-scale EV charger installation projects:

Slow chargers

Rated at 3kW – 6kW, these chargers can take around 5-8 hours to fully charge an EV or around 12 hours (or longer) for EVs with bigger batteries.

Slow chargers are suitable for off-hours, like nighttime. In other words, slow chargers are great for overnight charging.

Fast chargers

Fast chargers are the most common type of EV chargers in the UK. Rated at 7kW – 22kW, the 7kW charger takes about 3-5 hours to fully charge an EV, whereas a 22kW plug would get you from 0 to 100% in just a couple of hours.

These are the go-to chargers for most large-scale EV charger projects and are suitable for domestic and commercial use.

Rapid chargers

Bring on the speed with rapid chargers! These chargers come in AC and DC variants and are by far the quickest way to charge EVs.

Rated at a whopping 43kW – 50kW of power, they can charge standard EVs to about 80% at around 30 minutes to an hour. For larger vehicles, you can expect up to 1.5 hours.

Rapid chargers work in the same way as the chargers for your phone. They charge quickly to about 80% and then switch to “trickle charging” where the speed is reduced to protect the battery from damage and to prolong its life.

The DC variant of rapid chargers is even faster! You can expect ultra-rapid chargers powering at 150kW – 350kW.

These types of rapid chargers are often found near highways or other secluded areas where you need a quick charge.
